Abstract

It has become inevitable to have a shift in leadership theory due to the escalating nature of grand societal challenges such as climate change, social disparities, economic fluctuations, and environmental degradation. The development of sustainable leadership can be attributed to the emergence of sustainable leadership as a new form of leadership. This research is a literature review of the expanding academic discourse about sustainable leadership. Based on the findings of a comprehensive literature review, this paper highlights the individual factors (ethical principles, systems thinking, mindfulness, reflective practice, and resilience), as well as organisational factors (sustainability norms, sustainability-focused corporate culture, and stakeholders' involvement), that support sustainable leadership. This review has also delved into the dualities of sustainable leadership and has explored how leaders address conflicting needs through integrative thinking. In conclusion, this paper identifies key gaps within the existing body of literature and outlines meaningful directions for future inquiry. Specifically, it highlights the need for empirical research to validate current frameworks of sustainable leadership, comparative studies that examine how these practices vary across cultural contexts, and deeper investigation into how sustainable leadership operates within the unique settings of developing economies.

Through this review, we advance the conceptual development of sustainable leadership, establishing it as a distinct and coherent construct within the field. Additionally, the findings offer practical value: they provide clear insights for designing leadership development programmes and guiding organisations through the changes needed to adopt more sustainable practices.
